Sian Costello in Conversation with Mairead O’hEocha

To mark the closing of Hot Child, artist Sian Costello will be in conversation with Mairead O’hEocha on Friday, 30 August 2024 from 6.30–8pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

About Mairead O’hEocha

O’hEocha is represented in a number of significant exhibitions and publications that have explored contemporary painting practices, including Slow Painting, Hayward Gallery Touring Programme, UK (2019-2020); A Painter’s Doubt, Salzberger Kunstverein (2017); and Vitamin P3: New Perspectives in Painting), published by Phaidon, 2016. About Hot Child:

Born at the end of the last century, Sian Costello belongs to a generation of artists at the fore of a renaissance in figurative painting. Her fractured images teeter into abstraction and open up “hidden narratives of players involved in the portrayal of women, from art history to the present.”

In this way, her work can be seen as a retort to centuries of European painting in which female bodies are objectified as an artifice shaped according to male predilections. Using what she describes as “performative self-portraiture”, Costello interrogates legacies of female representation while conveying her own subjectivity – and, by extension, that of others.

Hot Child continues until 31 August. The show is kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Limerick City & County Council.
