Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen
Hanne Nielsen and Birgit Johnsen have an international reputation for artistic excellence, and are recipients of numerous awards including the new Carlsberg Foundation Art Award given in recognition of special contributions to Danish arts, the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Award, Denmark’s most substantial honorary grant for artists, and the prestigious Eckersberg Medal. Their investigative and experimental approach to video has given them pioneer status on the Danish art scene.
The artists’ work spans from minor single screens to major filmic productions, studio recordings and documentary explorations presented in immersive installations. Hanne and Birgit have collaborated since 1993, and have exhibited widely in Denmark and abroad, as well as participating in film festivals around the world. They have a large back catalogue, where they have depicted the world we live in with visual poetry, with humour, and with a persistent commitment to feminist political issues. In 2021, they received a lifetime achievement award from the Danish Arts Council.
Ormston House is delighted to welcome Hanne and Birgit to undertake a residency in Limerick this Autumn. During their visit, they will perform and film at locations in the city and county which will feature in a forthcoming artwork supported by the Danish Arts Foundation and the Arts Council of Ireland. The artists will exhibit their work at Ormston House next year curated by Mary Conlon. You can find out more about their work here.
