Tactical Devices
Artist Michael Cleary will deliver a practical workshop in Tactical Devices at Ormston House. The workshop stems from Michael’s postgraduate research in Social Practice and the Creative Environment at Limerick School of Art & Design and is part of the on-going Alternative Route project.
Alternative Route is an artist-led project entangled with issues related to how access to public and private spaces is facilitated or restricted through the use of precautionary or disciplinary architecture. Examples include walls, barriers, palisade fencing, checkpoints and turnstiles. Through tactical interventions, devices and adaptations, the project allows users to modify and sometimes to neutralise the function of these structures. This may be achieved simply by finding a means of getting over, getting by or getting through. Albeit with certain risks. The primary intention of the project is to reveal and make explicit the boundaries and limits of access in the everyday experience of our environment.
